About Us

The Miami County Community Foundation (MICOCF) was established in 2007 with a steadfast mission to enhance the business climate, quality of life, and cultural and educational development in greater Miami County, Kansas. Since its inception, MICOCF has been dedicated to creating a thriving and prosperous community for all residents.
About Us

What We Do

Our mission revolves around three core pillars:

  1. Improving the Business Climate: We strive to foster a supportive environment for local businesses, promoting economic growth and sustainability. By providing resources and funding, we aim to attract new businesses and support the expansion of existing ones, thereby creating more job opportunities and enhancing the economic landscape of Miami County.
  2. Enhancing Quality of Life: MICOCF is committed to improving the overall well-being of Miami County residents. We support initiatives that address critical needs such as healthcare, housing, and social services. Our goal is to ensure that every individual has access to the necessary resources to lead a healthy and fulfilling life.
  3. Promoting Cultural and Educational Development: We believe that cultural and educational enrichment is vital for a vibrant community. Our scholarship funds offer students the opportunity to pursue higher education, while our cultural grants support local arts, music, and heritage projects that celebrate and preserve the unique identity of Miami County.

Supporting Our Community

MICOCF consists of several Donor Advised Funds and Scholarship Funds, varying in size but united in purpose. We are dedicated to supporting the community where we work, live, and play. Our foundation assists donors in achieving their philanthropic objectives by establishing both restricted and unrestricted endowments, either during their lifetime or through planned giving.

Paola High School and Osawatomie High School elect two students each to join the Board of Trustees for a year and then participate with the Miami County Community Foundation’s Scholarship Committee in choosing recipients for the Leadership Scholarship. Students at each of the High Schools hold fundraisers to contribute to this scholarship. If you would like to contribute to this scholarship fund, please mail your check made payable to “OHS/PHS Leadership Scholarship” to the Miami County Community Foundation, 6 South Silver Street, Paola, KS 66071.

From Avelyn’s mother…

“In May of 2014 after our daughter Avelyn passed away, we wanted to do something impactful and something long-lasting with the memorial funds we had received; we wanted to bring about something positive out of the extremely difficult time we were going through. In October 2014, through a friend and the Holy Spirit, we were led to give away children’s bibles. Since then each May we have our Annual Let Your Light Shine Family 1 Mile Walk & 5k to continue to raise funds. If you would like to donate to this cause and help with our mission, please mail your check made payable to “Avelyn Sonshine Journey” to the Miami County Community Foundation, 6 South Silver Street, Paola, KS 66071.

You may learn more about this Journey at www.letyourlight-shine.com.

Shifting Gears is focused on raising awareness to teen suicide prevention and in helping families navigate life after the sudden loss of their child to suicide.

“We all will have times in our lives where we find it necessary to shift gears. For Regan, it was always on the race track doing what she loved. For those of us she left behind… We now find ourselves having to shift gears in search of our own “new normal”; trying to adjust to a life without our fiery little redhead. Suicide has become the 2nd leading cause of death among teenagers.”

– BJ Thomas

(Regan’s mother).

More information about this program will be available soon.  Please check back at a later date.

The D. O Smith Scholarship is awarded to students from Miami County who are enrolled in a nursing program.  To apply for this scholarship, please fill out this application.  Mail your completed application to:
