Understanding Memorial Donations & Memorial Gifts

Memorial gifts offer a meaningful way to pay tribute to someone special.

When we lose someone we love, it’s natural to want to do something meaningful to honor their memory. Memorial donations and memorial gifts provide a special way to remember those who have passed while also supporting causes that mattered to them.

  • Memorial donations are financial contributions made in the name of a loved one who has passed away. These donations are often directed to charities, organizations, or causes that held significance for the person or their family. By donating, you will help to continue their legacy and support others in the community in a way that reflects the loved one’s values.
  • Memorial gifts, on the other hand, can be more than just a donation. They might include benches, trees, plaques, or even scholarships set up in someone’s name. These gifts are lasting reminders of the person and often become cherished places or opportunities that keep their memory alive for those who loved them.

Deciding between a memorial donation and a memorial gift is a personal choice based on how you want to remember and honor your loved one. Both options allow you to express your love and respect, ensuring their spirit and influence live on.

No matter what you choose, what’s most important is the thought and care behind it. By selecting a cause or a gift that truly reflects who they were, you create a tribute that is as unique and special as they were. This simple act of giving keeps their memory alive and brings comfort to those who give.

Join us in shaping a better tomorrow for Miami County. Your support is more than just a donation. It’s an investment in our community.

Choosing the Right Charity for a Memorial Donation

A memorial donation is a thoughtful way to honor the memory of a loved one.

Selecting the right charity for a memorial donation is an important decision that can make a meaningful impact in honor of your loved one. It’s essential to choose a cause that reflects their values, passions, or the way they lived their life. Start by considering what mattered most to them—whether it was education, the environment, healthcare, or a local community initiative.

Research charities that align with these interests ensuring they have a strong reputation and use donations effectively. Consider local organizations that directly benefit the community where your loved one lived, as this can create a more personal connection and lasting legacy.

As a beautiful example, we would like to share the story of Avelyn SonShine Journey. In May of 2014, Avelyn’s family faced the heartbreaking loss of their beloved daughter. During this incredibly difficult time, they received many memorial donations and felt a deep desire to create something long-lasting and impactful in her memory.

Guided by a friend and their faith, they were inspired to start giving away children’s Bibles in Avelyn’s honor, bringing hope and light to others, just as Avelyn had done. To keep this mission alive, every May, Avelyn’s family holds the Annual Let Your Light Shine Family 1 Mile Walk & 5k, an event that raises funds to continue their heartfelt work.

This journey has become a way for them to transform their grief into something that honors Avelyn’s spirit and brings joy and comfort to others in the Miami County community.
