The importance of philanthropy in today’s world

At its core, philanthropy is about the act of giving. More specifically, it refers to the generous donation of money—or time and effort—to promote the welfare of others. Various forms of philanthropy exist, each with its unique focus and approach.

From impact philanthropy and strategic philanthropy to venture philanthropy and family philanthropy, these forms encapsulate the diverse ways people can support causes larger than themselves. Philanthropy is a powerful force in today’s society for several reasons:

  • It addresses complex problems like poverty, environmental challenges, and healthcare access—issues that governments might not always have the resources or ability to tackle alone.
  • It fosters lasting social change, creating a ripple effect that strengthens communities and touches lives for generations.
  • It’s not limited to monetary gifts—it also includes acts of volunteering and humanitarian contributions.
  • It brings people together, fosters unity, and creates a sense of belonging in communities.
  • It’s contagious, inspiring others to get involved when they witness its impact.
  • It fills gaps left by government funding, addressing needs that might otherwise go unmet, thereby supporting underfunded causes.

The act of giving can also expand personal and professional networks, connecting individuals with like-minded people and creating mutually beneficial relationships. Moreover, it promotes learning and understanding of the world through volunteerism, research, and firsthand experiences, ultimately broadening perspectives and fueling passion.

In the United States, giving has always been a part of the country’s character, culture, and economy. American philanthropy boasts a rich history marked by acts of extraordinary generosity.

For example, during World War I, Americans raised over $100 million to support orphans. Fast-forward to 2016, and Americans donated approximately $390 billion to charitable causes, demonstrating a consistent culture of giving.

And in Miami County, Kansas, charity work at the local level has often translated into swift, targeted, and effective solutions to community-specific issues. So join us on this journey that’s more than just a narrative of compassion and generosity—it’s an exploration of a community bound by a shared vision of upliftment and a commitment to progress.

In fact, there are numerous ways to make a meaningful impact using the previously mentioned top charities. The following are diverse methods of philanthropy that enable you to support causes close to your heart:

  • Writing a check: Despite the rise of digital payments, writing a check remains a common and straightforward method to support charitable organizations. Many people still prefer this traditional route, especially when dealing with substantial amounts. It’s direct, secure, and often gives donors a sense of tangibility to their contributions.
  • Online giving: Online giving or crowdfunding has become increasingly popular in our digital age. It allows donors from various backgrounds and financial capacities to make a difference quickly and efficiently. With just a few clicks, you can contribute to non-profit organizations locally.
  • Donor-Advised Fund (DAF): Donor-Advised Funds (DAFs) have gained significant popularity in recent years. They are charitable giving accounts managed by sponsoring organizations and serve as a convenient and cost-effective alternative to setting up a private foundation. With a DAF, you can contribute money, let the sponsoring institution manage it, and make grants to your chosen causes.
  • Private or family foundation: High-net-worth individuals and families often set up private foundations for their charitable activities. While some foundations are large and well-known, most are unstaffed with fewer than $1 million in assets. Establishing a private foundation requires legal guidance and meticulous planning but allows for aligning your philanthropic efforts with your personal values and interests.
  • Giving circles: These are collective giving groups in which individuals pool their resources to support mutual interest causes. They offer a collaborative and communal way to donate. You can find local or national giving circles through organizations like the National Giving Network and AARP’s Giving Circle Guide for Women.
  • Donate in-kind: Donating items such as cars, food, furniture, appliances, and clothing can greatly benefit charitable organizations. It’s essential to use reputable channels to ensure your donation reaches those in need. Food pantries and thrift shops are often in need of donations. Websites like FoodPantries.org can help you locate local food pantries near you.
  • Volunteering: Lastly, giving your time through volunteering is a priceless way to contribute. Volunteering has gained popularity across all age groups and backgrounds. It’s possible to volunteer in person or virtually, allowing you to tailor your involvement to your interests and availability. Not only does volunteering benefit the causes you support, but it also offers personal fulfillment and potential networking opportunities.
