History and mission

The Miami County Community Foundation (MICOCF) was founded in 2007. Since then, the nonprofit has been working hard to make Miami County, Kansas, an even better place to live. Our mission is to support the community through smart philanthropy.

How do we do this? MICOCF manages various funds, including donor-advised funds and scholarships. We work with donors to set up endowments, which are investments that generate income. MICOCF uses that income to provide grants to local nonprofits and community projects.

“Shifting Gears” is a program created by MICOCF to help raise awareness about teen suicide prevention and support families who have experienced this tragic loss. The program was started in memory of Regan Johnson, a young race car enthusiast who died by suicide.

Regan’s mother, BJ Thomas, explains that just as Regan had to shift gears when racing, families affected by suicide must also find a new normal as they grieve. Suicide is the second leading cause of death among teenagers, so this program aims to provide resources, raise awareness, and create a supportive community for those left behind.

The goal of “Shifting Gears” is to make a real difference in the lives of those impacted by teen suicide. The program hopes to prevent future tragedies and help families heal by offering support and education.

War Horses for Veterans was a nonprofit founded to support combat veterans and first responders through equine therapy.

The Olathe Health Charitable Foundation has raised over $10 million. This money has been used to improve healthcare in the community in two ways:

4. Louisburg Library Foundation

The Louisburg Library has a great summer program called “SummerBASH” that runs throughout the summer. It’s designed to get kids and teens reading and learning while they’re out of school. In 2023, over 300 kids took part in SummerBASH and read more than 10,000 books! Parents were really happy with the program, saying it positively impacted their kids’ reading habits and hunger for learning.

  • Computers, accessories, and WiFi: They provide everyone free access to technology and the internet.
  • Curbside service: You can check out and return materials without entering the library.
  • Interlibrary loan: If you cannot find the book you are searching for, the team can borrow it from another library for you.
  • Test proctoring: They help students and professionals with their exam requirements.
  • The Lab: This is a cool creative space to explore and use various technologies and tools.

Results

The library’s programs have had a significant impact on the local community. For example, the Senior Services and Homebound Delivery program has been essential for elderly residents who cannot visit the library in person. Over the past year, this program has served more than 150 seniors, providing them with vital access to reading materials and fostering a sense of connection and belonging.

6. Wayside Waifs

Wayside Waifs is Kansas City’s biggest and most complete no-kill pet adoption center. It was started in 1944 to help with the problem of stray and abandoned pets in the area. Over the years, this non-profit has become an essential community resource.

Wayside Waifs helps over 27,000 pets and people every year through different programs. These include pet adoptions, teaching kids about pets, training dogs, and reaching out to the community. The organization aims to prepare pets and people for a lifelong bond, promoting responsible pet ownership and humane treatment of animals.
